Meanwhile
And so I sit here and think about how cool it would be to use this Powermac on a daily base but I do not have a daily use for it. I listen to music with TerminalDrome (Link) and read/write my Mail with Mutt and compile this static Website with hugo on another server (as I am connected to it while writing) and am happy about it but this is nothign real. All this is just something to bring time up. Down. In germany we say “Zeit herum bringen” and it means to do something unimportant to let the time slips away.
Anyways…
I still don’t know what to do. So what we have here?
- a Powermac G5 with 12 GB-Ram
- ArchPOWER Linux
- Mac OS X 10.5.8 with everything from 10.5.9
- fancy OpenBox with own riced Theme
- GeForce 6600 GS
- 2 x SSDs on SATA
- Cinema HD 23" Display
- Original Keyboard and mouse
It is not possible to use GPU-Acceleration with the drivers and I am unable to code new drivers and I don’t want to vibecode shit out of nothing. And blame the Enivornment for water and heat and Datacentres just for my own pleasure on this Powermac G5.
I thought I can activate NV43 GPU Acceleration and compile an old Firefox with OpenGL 2.X Support to have this also accelerated but nithing of this really works or draws failures on the screen, as I described here more technical.
- Firefox 92 on a PowerMac G5: Cross-Compiling 2021 Code with a 2026 Toolchain
- Hardware 3D acceleration on a PowerMac G5: the DRI3 trap
So I think I put this setup back in the closet because Powermac and Display consumpts 250 Watt and this is a lot for doing nothing.
Bye
