Dec VT 520 Terminal
I am a big fan of Terminals since I ever discovered them. Because I am a few years too young to truly know or use them, I am so fascinated by them. Above all, I really like the idea of a silent computer with a full keyboard that connects to an actual computer. Logging into a “mainframe” evokes, for me, the kind of charm that, back in the day, only the young Karl Koch 1 truly experienced.

I don’t know if it’s the smooth scrolling by them or the feel of a real text terminal exploring the world, the web, other computers. And because I happen to like all of that so much, I finally seized the opportunity and managed to get my hands on a fairly well-preserved unit. It’s a DEC VT 520.
And I am writing this article here on that great VT 520 next on my desk. It can do a lot more. So it has built-in TMUX or Sessions, I can connect to 4 Servers at the same time and can show two of them directly on my screen while the other two are waiting. Or I click one by one trough all of them.
With that Terminal came the corresponding keyboard LK411-AG with german layout. It is horrible. In a follow-up post I will explain how you can use it with german umlauts (ÄÖÜäöü) on your german Linux Distro while UTF-8 will be translated by a screen session to the VT 520 ISO.
